What are rarity traits?

Understanding How Rarity Impacts Utility, Supply, and Strategy in Star Atlas

Rarity defines the uniqueness and exclusivity of NFTs in Star Atlas but it's not always just about how many exist

Each Star Atlas NFT whether it's a ship, crew member, collectible, or structure, is assigned a rarity tier that represents its perceived value, exclusivity and in many cases, its future utility in the game. While some rarities correlate with lower supply, rarity doesn’t always mean fewer editions, especially for items like ships where gameplay role and capabilities may also define rarity.

Understanding Rarity Tiers

Rarity in Star Atlas is categorized as follows, from most common to most rare:

  • Common

  • Uncommon

  • Rare

  • Epic

  • Legendary

  • Anomaly

These designations help players understand where an item sits in terms of exclusivity and potential in-game value. For example:

  • A Common ship might be widely available and fulfill general gameplay roles

  • An Anomaly crew patch or badge might be ultra-limited and offer exclusive event access or long-term perks

Rarity ≠ Supply (Always)

While many collectibles and gear follow a straightforward "rarer = fewer minted" model, other categories—especially ships may vary. Some rare ships may have higher supply due to demand or gameplay balance needs, while some uncommon items may be scarce due to limited early release

Why Rarity Matters

  • Future Utility – Rare items may unlock specialized features in upcoming game modes (e.g., in UE5 or SAGE).

  • Prestige & Flexibility – Rarer NFTs often come with enhanced stats, traits, or compatibility across gameplay loops

  • Collectibility – For traders and collectors, rarity affects value and market demand
