What Are In-Game Zones in Star Atlas?
The Star Atlas metaverse is divided into three primary risk zones that structure how gameplay, exploration, and conflict are experienced. These zones are essential for understanding how safety, rewards, and risk scale across the galaxy.

Security Zone (SZ) – Safe & Social
This is each faction’s home region, heavily protected by the Council of Peace (COP)
Ideal for beginners, social interactions, and low-risk exploration
Combat is restricted: Only consensual duels are allowed using an opt-in system
No permanent asset loss is possible here
Duel loot is limited to staked wagers—no full destruction or theft
Medium Risk Zone (MRZ) – PvE & Limited PvP
Found between the Safety Zone and the galaxy’s center.
NPC pirates and raiders frequently attack, posing a moderate threat.
Non-consensual PvP is allowed but discouraged via a bounty system.
Combat losses don’t result in permanent destruction, but reclamation fees are higher.
Opportunistic players may commit crimes like theft or attacks, triggering bounty rewards for bounty hunters.
High Risk Zone (HRZ) – Dangerous & High Stakes
Located between MRZ quadrants and the galaxy’s mysterious center: The Cataclysm
No bounty enforcement applies here—anything goes
PvP and high-level NPC threats are constant
Permanent loss of ships, crew, and assets is possible unless covered by insurance
High rewards attract experienced and daring players who accept the ultimate risks
Crime & Bounties
Criminal behavior like unprovoked attacks or theft is tracked by the COP in SZ and MRZ
Bounties apply to ships/fleets (not crew) and escalate with repeat offenses
Players can take on bounty hunting contracts to apprehend or eliminate offenders—both NPC and player
Star Atlas’ zone system balances safety for newcomers with escalating risk and reward for veterans. Whether you’re seeking peaceful exploration or full-throttle conflict, there’s a place in the stars for every playstyle.
